Beijing is a vast city of some 15 million people. There is a mad urgency here. Mass modernization means construction cranes are everywhere. Almost all of the old residential "hutongs" are being torn down. The government wants the people to change their habits as well: new laws against public spitting are being enforced. Beijing is a fascinating place, a city who's ancient past is never that far behind and who's future is just around the next modernization project.
